Junior basketball development is where the Australian basketball journey begins. Before players represent Australia or reach the NBL, most first learn the game through their local basketball association.

While hundreds of rookies have entered the NBL over the years, the same junior basketball programs regularly appear in their backgrounds. Some associations have developed significantly more NBL talent than others, establishing themselves as important pathways into professional basketball.

Until now, a complete record of the junior association responsible for developing every player to have competed in the NBL had never been compiled.

With the help of Australia’s basketball community, we have created an ongoing list of every player to have appeared in the NBL and the junior basketball association that helped develop them.

Honourable Mentions

Just outside the top five are Townsville, Launceston and Geelong, with all three associations having produced 26 NBL players.

QLD – Townsville: Townsville has long been one of regional Australia’s strongest basketball nurseries. The depth of local talent was evident when the Townsville Suns entered the NBL in 1993 with a roster featuring locally developed players including David Blades, Lucas Agrums, Jason Cameron, Tonny Jensen and Graham Kubank.

TAS – Launceston: Launceston’s position on the list reflects northern Tasmania’s rich basketball history. The city competed during the early years of the NBL and has remained an important part of Tasmania’s junior development pathway, while also hosting the state’s largest junior basketball tournament.

VIC – Geelong: Geelong has maintained one of Australia’s strongest regional basketball pathways, developing players through its junior programs and the Supercats’ involvement across the NBL, SEABL and NBL1. The formation of Geelong United later brought the region’s grassroots, representative and senior programs together under one development pathway.

5. Melbourne – 29 NBL Players

The Melbourne Basketball Association can trace its history to the introduction of basketball in Victoria during the 1920s. The club evolved from St Luke’s to Church of England, then Church and Melbourne Church, before officially becoming the Melbourne Tigers in 1975.

The Melbourne Tigers Junior Basketball Club was founded by Ken Watson, who coached the Australian national team at the 1956 and 1968 Olympic Games. Hall of Fame coach Lindsay Gaze took over from Watson during the 1960s.

The Tigers entered the National Basketball League in 1984 with Gaze as coach and his son Andrew headlining the team. The program regularly promoted players directly from its junior system into the NBL squad and competed under the Melbourne Tigers name until 2014, when the club was purchased by Larry Kestelman and renamed Melbourne United.

4. Nunawading – 37 NBL Players

Nunawading Basketball was established in 1969 and became one of the NBL’s foundation clubs when the national competition launched in 1979.

Nunawading competed in the NBL as the Spectres from 1979 to 1986 before the team was renamed the Eastside Spectres in an attempt to connect with the wider eastern suburbs basketball community.

The Eastside Spectres continued in the league for another five seasons before merging with the Southern Melbourne Saints in 1992 to form the South East Melbourne Magic.

Nunawading has continued to compete in Victoria’s state basketball competitions, winning championships in 1995 and 2011. The association also retains a strong connection to the Spectres and South East Melbourne Magic, with many supporters continuing to recognise the program’s NBL history.

3. Sturt – 38 NBL Players

The Sturt Sabres are one of Australia’s oldest and most successful basketball programs.

The club began in 1960 when 11 players from the South Australian United Church Basketball Association entered a United Church team at Forestville Stadium. John and Malcolm Heard, who were members of that team, were selected to represent Australia at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games.

Since then, Sturt has remained a regular pathway into the Australian Boomers program and professional basketball.

Plans were developed for Sturt to enter the NBL during the early 1980s, but the club never joined the national competition. Phil Smyth famously travelled from Adelaide to Melbourne in 1982 to play in the NBL while waiting for a Sturt team to enter the league.

Five Sturt players have gone on to compete at the Olympic Games, including John Heard, Phil Smyth and Brett Maher.

2. Newcastle – 38 NBL Players

It should come as little surprise that the basketball program credited with helping create the NBL also ranks among Australia’s leading developers of professional talent.

In 1978, Newcastle Basketball president John Raschke met with representatives from 10 interested clubs inside an unused aircraft hangar at Sydney Airport. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the formation of a national basketball competition that could help grow and develop the sport throughout Australia.

The meeting resulted in the creation of the National Basketball League. The other nine foundation clubs reportedly paid Newcastle a fee of approximately AU$300 to participate in the inaugural season, helping establish Newcastle as one of the birthplaces of professional basketball in Australia.

The Newcastle Falcons entered the NBL in 1979 with a roster built heavily around local players. The club continued to rely on talent produced within the Newcastle region throughout its time in the league, which lasted until 1999.

1. Illawarra – 58 NBL Players

Illawarra Basketball has been developing Australian basketball talent since 1954.

When Australia’s national competition was established in 1979, the program entered the NBL as the Illawarra Hawks. The Hawks have remained part of the competition ever since and are the only foundation club still competing in the league.

Illawarra has continually relied on locally developed players to support the team’s success. That commitment to the region culminated in 2001 when the Hawks won their first NBL championship, becoming the first team from New South Wales to claim the league title.
